Passengers must have a valid ticket before boarding the train or be subject to citation.
Please show ticket to the conductor or fare inspector upon request.
One-way tickets and Day passes can only be purchased at the station on the day of
travel due to validity period. Monthly and 8-ride tickets may be purchased in
advance at staffed stations,
Ticket Vending Machines (TVM), or through the mail.
Cash, checks and credit or debit cards may be used to purchase tickets at stations.
Caltrain fares are based on the number of zones
that are partially or wholly traveled through by the passenger.
TICKET TYPES
One-way Ticket
Valid for use within four hours of the date and time sold. One-way tickets will be
honored for one-way passage away from the point of origin, including
stopovers/transfers, within the zone limits.
Day Pass
Day passes are honored for unlimited travel within zone limits. Valid for use
through the last train on the service day on which sold.
8-ride Ticket
This ticket is valid for 60 days from date of purchase within zones indicated on the ticket. It may be used by the purchaser and any member of the traveling party. The ticket must be validated prior to boarding: validators are located on station platforms. The validation expires after four hours. Trip, including stopovers, must be completed by end of validation period. If a validator is not working, passengers must immediately notify a conductor upon boarding the train.
Monthly Pass
Ticket sales start on the 21st of the month and stop on the 9th of the month that the ticket is active.
Valid for use for the calendar month for which issued. Monthly passes will be
honored for unlimited weekday trips between zones indicated on the pass. On
Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, the pass will be honored for unlimited trips
between all zones. In addition, the Monthly Pass will be valid until noon
on the first weekday of the following month. When the first weekday of the
following month falls on a legal holiday, the Monthly Pass will be honored
until noon on the next weekday.
Zone Upgrade Ticket
Valid for use within four hours of the date and time sold. Zone Upgrade tickets are
valid only when accompanying another valid ticket (One-way, Day Pass, 8-ride or
Monthly tickets) and cannot be used alone. The Zone Upgrade ticket will be honored
for one-way passage for additional zones purchased beyond the original ticket's zone
limits. The Zone Upgrade ticket's validity period does not supercede the original
ticket's validity period.
ELIGIBLE DISCOUNT: Senior / Disabled / Youth / Medicare Cardholder
Full fares will apply to all customers 18 years of age or older except those who
qualify for an Eligible Discount ticket, which is approximately 50 percent of the
full-fare price.
Definitions
Senior: customers 65 years of age or older.
Disabled: customers holding any of the following valid
identification: Regional Transit Connection Discount Card;
Registration for a permanent disabled California license plate or parking placard
issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Youth: customers 17 years old or younger or possessing a valid high
school identification card. When one or more children four years old or younger are
accompanied by one paying adult, only one child will be transported free of charge.
All other children must travel on Youth tickets.
Medicare cardholder: customers who have a Medicare card.
TICKET VENDING MACHINE
The ticket vending machines accept coins, bills and
credit cards for payment.
TICKET-BY-MAIL
Caltrain offers a Ticket-By-Mail program, which eliminates the need for customers to
stand in line. Caltrain automatically mails your ticket to you each month. An
application is available on-line. Completed
applications may be mailed to: Caltrain, P.O. Box 3006, San Carlos CA 94070-1306 or
faxed to 650.508.6443. Caltrain also offers a prepayment program for 8-ride and Monthly tickets. Call 650.508.7921 for information on
either program.
TICKET-BY-INTERNET
Caltrain offers the opportunity to order 8-ride tickets by e-mail.
Ticket-By-Internet allows you to place an order from
the convenience of your home, office, school...anywhere!
MISCELLANEOUS
Caltrain Monthly Pass buyers who use Muni, SamTrans, VTA and/or Dumbarton Express
as part of their commute have additional Caltrain pass
options and uses.
Commuter Checks can be used to
purchase Caltrain tickets at staffed stations, at Caltrain headquarters, 1250 San
Carlos Ave., San Carlos and through Ticket-By-Mail. Up to 10 Commuter Checks may be
redeemed at one time. Expired Commuter Checks cannot be accepted or replaced. If a
Caltrain ticket that costs more than the value of your Commuter Check is purchased,
you must pay the difference. If you buy a ticket that costs less than the value of
your Commuter Check, the difference cannot be returned as change or merchandise.
