EPAMD Policy for Caltrain

Caltrain customers with disabilities may bring an EPAMD (Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Device) such as a Segway on Caltrain if the device is used as a mobility device. Caltrain has developed a policy that provides for EPAMDs to be boarded on the train as long as the customer obtains a permit from Caltrain and follows instructions for boarding and stowing the device.

To obtain a permit, a customer must request an application by calling Caltrain at 650.508.6202. The application must be filled out in part by a doctor to certify that the individual has a disability that requires the use of an EPAMD.

Once Caltrain receives the completed application, Caltrain staff will schedule a proficiency review with the applicant at a Caltrain station. The applicant will be asked to execute a variety of maneuvers to demonstrate capability to handle the device safely on train platforms. The applicant will be instructed how to board and stow the EPAMD on the two different types of Caltrain cars (gallery and Bombardier) and will take a short trip on both types of equipment to become familiar with the rules.

If approved, the applicant will receive an identification card and a placard to mount on the EPAMD, visible to Caltrain personnel. The ID card and placard show the expiration month and year of the permit. The permit is valid for a year.
