North CTX Construction Moving Faster than Expected
Construction on the biggest Caltrain modernization project in the rail agency's
history is progressing well. Crews at Millbrae will begin laying a new third track
and auxiliary platform that will accommodate service to the new Millbrae Intermodal
Station.
Construction is right on schedule to complete all major work at the station before
the BART opening, which is planned for January 2003.
In order to accommodate the third track south of the new Millbrae station, Caltrain's
main track two, which serves passengers traveling south, will be moved several feet
to the west. As a result, the current Millbrae platform will be demolished to allow
space for the track's movement.
Passengers using the current Millbrae station will begin boarding and alighting at
the north section of the platform on Monday, Sept. 2. As work continues the boarding
location will change. Passengers should watch for station notices directing them to
the appropriate boarding area.
North CTX work is progressing at both the Millbrae and San Francisco construction
sites with track reconstruction, which includes changing rail and upgrading ties from
wood to concrete in these locations.
Work also has begun at the Brisbane rail bridge, which will be rebuilt over the
course of this project.
At the Millbrae and San Francisco locations, construction is expected to last until
spring of 2003. As work in those locations draws to a close, the contractor will
begin track reconstruction at the Bayshore station.
Bayshore station also will be rebuilt over the next couple of years.
