Bikes and Baby Bullet
Caltrain had a very successful launch of the Baby Bullet service.
The only significant operational issue is that we were not able to accommodate some
of the bicyclists waiting to board the Baby Bullet equipment. As you know, the Baby
Bullet trains are limited to 16 bike spaces, which has been noted in our printed
materials. This is to preserve space for the new riders who we hope will be
attracted to this premium new express service that is so important to Caltrain’s
future growth.
Some cyclists did not seem to be aware of the bike capacity on Bullet trains and were
not able to board these trains. Initially, we also had a problem when the Baby
Bullet equipment was used in non-Bullet service during the commute and some waiting
cyclists had to be turned away. Caltrain’s operations staff reallocated equipment so
we can be assured of having at least 32 bike spaces in non-Bullet peak service.
It should be noted that, overall, the number of bike spaces before 9 a.m. on weekdays
has increased by more than 100 southbound and 16 northbound effective with the new
train schedule, and cyclists are encouraged to look at all the available commute-hour
options.
Bike lockers are available at all Baby Bullet stations. To rent a bike locker,
please complete an application (PDF,
