Caltrain to Rebuild Rail Crossings in San Bruno

Crews will begin reconstructing the railroad grade crossing at Scott Street in San Bruno. Construction will take place over two weekends: July 27 – 29 and Aug. 3 – 6, to do maintenance work and improve safety. The work has been scheduled and planned in order to minimize the impact to the neighborhood and to Caltrain riders.

During the weekend construction, Scott Street will be closed at the railroad tracks between Herman Street and Montgomery Avenue. Work will take place starting on Friday evening and continue though approximately 5 a.m. on Monday.

In July, crews will work on the eastern main track to replace the existing worn asphalt, rails, ties and ballast, and to improve drainage.

In August, crews will work on the westerly main track and the entire construction sequence will be repeated. New paving will be completed adjacent to the tracks creating a smooth vehicular crossing surface.

Neighbors will hear construction noise from backup alarms on equipment, as well as from heavy machinery. Two portable light towers, powered by a diesel generator, will be used for night work as well, with the lights focused on the tracks to illuminate the work area.

From Friday evening through early Saturday morning during the weekend construction period, one track will be closed for repairs. Trains through the construction area will have to run on a single track in both directions. As a result, passengers for the last north- and southbound Friday trains at the San Bruno station will have to board from the same platform. Announcements about this will be made by conductors on board trains and at stations.
