Three Transit Organizations Endorse High Speed Rail
The Boards of Directors for the San Mateo County Transit District, San Mateo County Transportation Authority and the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, which operates Caltrain, each unanimously endorsed State Proposition 1A at their meetings this month.
The proposition, titled the Safe, Reliable High-speed Passenger Train Bond Act for the 21st Century, will be on the November ballot and, if approved, would finance the construction of a statewide High Speed Rail system.
“It is in the best interest of San Mateo County and Caltrain that the High Speed Rail project proceeds and includes the Caltrain right of way as an integral part of it,” said Ian McAvoy, who is the chief development officer for the three transportation agencies.
“The project will allow for many key opportunities for coordinated efforts between Caltrain and the proposed High Speed Rail system that could complement the Caltrain Electrification and Caltrain 2015 programs,” McAvoy added.
The California High Speed Rail Authority recently issued a contract to develop engineering and environmental work, which will include working with the communities along the Peninsula.
