Caltrain

Factsheet: Dumbarton Rail Bridge

Lead Agency:
San Mateo County Transportation Authority

Contractor:
To be determined by competitive bid

Project Limits:
From Redwood City, across the bay, to Newark

Construction Cost:
$300 Million (estimate)

Begin Construction:
January 2009

End Construction:
December 2012

Reason for Project:
This project will enhance regional connectivity between Bay Area public transit systems and enhance the regional rail network. It also will serve to alleviate traffic congestion on the existing Dumbarton Bridge and intersection highways, and improve the region’s ability to accommodate future transportation demands. The anticipated plan calls for six trains across the bridge during the morning and six during the evening commutes. Morning trains will originate at the Union City Transit Center; three will travel north through Redwood City and three will travel south through Redwood City.

Scope of Work:
The project will rehabilitate rail bridges and tracks that span the bay between Redwood City and Newark and make improvements to existing tracks in Union City and Fremont. The project will involve the construction of three new rail stations at Menlo Park/East Palo Alto and Newark, as well as upgrades to the Fremont Centerville Station and a new intermodal station at the Union City BART station.
