Year in Review – Electrification
Caltrain Electrification is a transformational project modernizing a 150-year-old corridor, creating jobs across the country, combating climate change, and significantly improving service for riders. The new high-performance trainsets and their associated infrastructure in California represent a key milestone in the state’s transit and sustainability future. Despite the global pandemic, the project made significant progress in 2021.
Here’s a look at this past year’s accomplishments.
Electric Trains
The new electric trainsets will usher in a new era, making Caltrain the first modern, electrified commuter railroad in California. At the Salt Lake City, Utah manufacturing facility 73 train cars are now in assembly with parts from across the United States. The first trainset also completed full-speed testing at the federal Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo, Colorado. In the year ahead we will receive our first trainset that will undergo testing on the Caltrain corridor.

Infrastructure
This year, every city along the 51-mile corridor saw installation of infrastructure that will power the new electric trains. Over 3,000 foundations and 1,900 poles have been installed between San Francisco and San Jose, with all foundations south of San Bruno installed! Construction is also underway on all ten traction power facilities which will provide, distribute, and regulate electricity to the new trains. In 2022 Caltrain will focus on testing of the infrastructure and system integration.
