Caltrain 160

2024 marks the 160th Anniversary of rail service between San Francisco and San Jose, the oldest continually-run railroad west of the Mississippi. It is also the year Caltrain will launch Electrified service, another historic landmark in the evolution of rail in the Bay Area. A lot of progress has been made on Caltrain Electrification since the 150th Anniversary. Join us on social media as we explore the history of the railroad, sharing the colorful past and reflecting on the future of Caltrain Electrification.

On January 16, 1864 the first steam train made its way down the Peninsula past Mayfield, to San Jose.
