Caltrain to Hold Public Meeting on Grade Separation in Burlingame

Caltrain will host a community meeting in Burlingame on Wednesday, August 8, to discuss progress on the Preliminary Design Phase for a grade separation between the Caltrain tracks and Broadway. The meeting will take place at the Lane Room of the Burlingame Library, 480 Primrose Road, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The high traffic volumes at the Broadway railroad crossing results in some of the worst traffic congestion in the region. A preferred design alternative was approved by the Burlingame City Council in 2017 for the Burlingame Broadway Grade Separation Project that would raise the tracks and lower the road at the intersection of Broadway and the Caltrain tracks. When implemented, the new design will reduce congestion, improve safety and increase the operational efficiency of the rail service.

Broadway is one of the more dangerous grade crossings along the Caltrain corridor   and is currently ranked at the top of the California Public Utilities Commission priority list for grade separations. There was one vehicle struck at Broadway this year, one in 2017 and three in 2016.

About Caltrain: Owned and operated by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, Caltrain provides commuter rail service from San Francisco to San Jose, with limited commute service to Gilroy. Caltrain enjoyed more than five years of consecutive monthly ridership increases, surpassing more than 65,000 average weekday riders. While the Joint Powers Board assumed operating responsibilities for the service in 1992, the railroad celebrated 150 years of continuous passenger service in 2014. Planning for the next 150 years of Peninsula rail service, Caltrain is on pace to electrify the system, reduce diesel emissions by 97 percent by 2040 and add more service to more stations.
