Caltrain Joins the Great ShakeOut

Caltrain will participate in the Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill Thursday, Oct. 17, to help raise public awareness of the importance of earthquake safety and being prepared.

Caltrain is conducting an earthquake awareness program with the public and staff to promote safe procedures in an event of earthquake. Conductors and automated announcements will be promoting earthquake safety to mark the occasion.

Caltrain has a membership in the University of California at Berkeley's Rapid Earthquake Data Integration system. Caltrain has used the REDI system since 1994 to identify the magnitude and location of earthquakes and their possible impact on Caltrain's tracks and structures. This allows Caltrain maintenance of way staff to assess the condition of the system without needing to physically inspect all 52 route miles between San Francisco and San Jose.

Caltrain service will be unaffected by the drill.
