Construction
San Francisco Roadway Bridges Project
Night/Weekend Work
There is
night and weekend work planned for Thursday, January 12 to Monday, January 16.
Crews will be installing the precast bridge girders.
Access
to residential driveways on 22nd Street between Pennsylvania Avenue
and Iowa Street may be temporarily impacted from 12 a.m. to 8 a.m. Thursday,
January 12 to Monday, January 16. Crews will be delivering and unloading
precast bridge girders during these times. Delivery of the girders may block
access to driveways along 22nd Street for up to 15 minutes at a
time. Access will not be blocked unnecessarily. Crews will be on site and will restore
access as soon as possible.
Weekday Work
* In
general, all weekday construction activity will occur between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.
on Monday through Friday. Neighbors may experience construction noise during
this time. We apologize for the inconvenience.
22nd
Street Bridge
Thursday, January 12 and Friday, January 13, crews will prepare and
mobilize equipment for the precast girder installation occurring over the
weekend.
The closure of 22nd Street between Iowa Street and
Pennsylvania began on Tuesday, April 19, 2016. During the closure, vehicular access to 22nd
Street between Iowa Street and Pennsylvania Avenue will remain closed during
the removal and replacement of the bridge. Detour signage will be in place
to direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic during the closure.
A temporary pedestrian bridge has been
installed to maintain limited pedestrian access across 22nd Street.
The temporary pedestrian bridge is intended for use by Caltrain customers
accessing the 22nd Street Caltrain Station.
Background
Caltrain is preparing to remove and replace
the existing vehicular/pedestrian bridges over the Caltrain tracks at 22nd
Street, 23rd Street, and Paul Avenue in San Francisco. Existing abutments will
also be retrofitted to support the new structure. Utilities supported by the
bridges will be temporarily relocated during bridge removal and construction.
The three bridges are deemed structurally deficient,
do not meet existing seismic safety standard and must be replaced to ensure the
safety and well-being of community members and Caltrain passengers.

San Carlos Transit Center Project
Monday, January 9, to Friday, January 13, crews will continue improvements
to the south Caltrain parking lot. Crews will conduct utility and irrigation work.
Some parking
spaces in the Caltrain parking lot and along the eastside of El Camino between
Cherry and Arroyo will be removed permanently as part of the project. On-site
notices will be provided at least 72 hours in advance before the removal of
parking.
Background
The San Carlos Multi-Modal Transit Center Project (Transit Center) is
located on the west side of the railroad corridor at the site of the existing
San Carlos Caltrain Station. The Transit Center project consists of transforming
the existing San Carlos Caltrain Station parking lot into a multi-modal transit
center that will better serve the community by improving safety and
accessibility between SamTrans fixed route bus services, Caltrain commuter rail
services, local shuttles, pedestrians and bicyclists. For more information on
the project, please visit www.samtrans.com/sctc.
The
Transit Center project is part of the larger mixed-use transit-oriented
development, the San Carlos Transit Village, which is a joint development
between SamTrans and Prometheus Real Estate Group. For information about the San Carlos Transit
Village Project visit: http://cityofsancarlos.org/planning/projects/san_carlos_transit_village/default.asp
Los Gatos Creek
Bridge Pre-Construction Utility Work
Night/Weekend Work
There is no night or weekend work scheduled for
the project at this time.
Weekday Work
There is currently no work scheduled at the
Los Gatos Creek Bridge site.
For more information on the Los Gatos Creek
Bridge Replacement Project, please visit www.caltrain.com/losgatos.
Construction for the bridge replacement is expected to begin in Early 2016.
Peninsula
Corridor Electrification Project
The Peninsula Corridor
Electrification Project (PCEP) is a key component of the Caltrain Modernization
program. The PCEP would electrify the Caltrain Corridor from San Francisco’s
4th and King Caltrain Station to approximately the Tamien Caltrain Station.
The primary purpose of
the Project is to improve Caltrain system performance, reduce long-term
environmental impact by reducing noise, improving regional air quality and
reducing greenhouse gas emissions. An electrified Caltrain system would better
address Peninsula commuters’ vision of increased service and improved
travel times in an environmentally friendly and reliable way. This also
is expected to help accommodate increase system ridership through improved
system operations.

Communications
Based Overlay Signal System (CBOSS) Positive Train Control (PTC) Project
The CBOSS
PTC Project is an advanced signal system that will equip the corridor and
trains with federally-mandated safety technology and will increase system
capacity to help accommodate future ridership demand.
The
project will monitor and, if necessary, control train movement in the event of
human error. This will increase safety by:
- Eliminating
the risk of train-to-train collisions. - Reducing
risk of potential derailments by enforcing speed limits. - Providing
additional safety for railroad workers on the tracks.
- Improving
grade crossing performance to reduce gate downtime and improve local
traffic circulation.
The CBOSS PTC Project
is also a key component of the Caltrain Modernization Program, which will
electrify the Caltrain Corridor by 2020. An electrified Caltrain will be
cleaner and quieter and will upgrade the system to provide faster and/or more
frequent service to more stations and riders.
To implement the project, Caltrain will be identifying utilities, digging a
small trench and/or boring close to the tracks to install fiber optic cable. In
order to maintain daytime train service, Caltrain will be performing some of
this work at night.
San Francisco
On January
7 and January 9 – 13, Caltrain will be conducting safety tests on the corridor
as part of the final phase of implementing the Advanced Signal System Project.
To test the Advanced Signal System, including the roadway crossings, a test
train will run through the corridor between 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Tests are
conducted at night to avoid disruption of most of regular train service and
properly record the results. Neighbors may experience standard gate crossing
noise and horns during this time and we apologize for any inconvenience this
may cause.

Maintenance
Caltrain will perform routine maintenance at several locations next week. To
avoid disruptions to service, the work will mainly take place Saturday through
Friday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. For more information about this type of work,
or call 650.508.7726.
San Francisco to
San Jose
Saturday,
January 7, to Friday, January 13, crews will pressure wash and perform
janitorial work at Caltrain stations between the San Francisco and Tamien
stations.
South San Francisco to Burlingame
Monday, January
9, to Friday, January 13, crews will resurface rail between the South San
Francisco and Broadway stations. Resurfacing corrects the alignment of uneven
rails to make them smooth, minimizing the jerks and bumps experienced by
passengers and reducing the mechanical strain on the rails. Neighbors may
experience construction noise during this time. Crews will work as quietly as
possible.
Millbrae to Belmont
Monday, January
9 to Friday, January 13, crews will replace ties between the Millbrae and
Belmont stations. Caltrain uses several different on-track, self-propelled
machines to replace cross ties, and neighbors may experience construction noise
during this time. Crews will work as quietly as possible
San Jose
Monday, January
9 to Friday, January 13, crews will weld and grind rail near the San Jose
Diridon Station. The welding crew uses air compressors, gas-powered generators,
small power tools, electric-arc welders and propane heaters. Neighbors may
experience construction noise during this time. Crews will work as quietly as
possible.
