Caltrain will begin a two-week rail grinding project on April 26 that will result in reduced noise impacts for neighbors near the right of way and smoother rides for passengers. A rail-mounted, locomotive-sized grinder will be used to restore the shape of the rail to its original configuration. This allows a better fit for the train wheel on top of the rails head.
The work will begin in San Francisco and proceed south to the cities of South San Francisco, San Bruno, Burlingame, San Mateo and San Jose. Work at any one location will be completed in one or two nights. The entire project is expected to be complete by May 19.
During the rail maintenance activity, there will be noise impacts to areas immediately adjacent to the rail alignment while the grinding is taking place. The noise level roughly compares to shop tools or someone shouting, but is quieter than a train whistle or a gas-powered lawn mower. The grinding will also create a shower of sparks, so fire suppression equipment will be on hand throughout the process.
The equipment must be used when there is reduced train traffic, which means the grinding must take place from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.

About Caltrain: Owned and operated by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, Caltrain provides commuter rail service from San Francisco to San Jose, with limited commute service to Gilroy. Caltrain enjoyed five years of consecutive monthly ridership increases, surpassing more than 60,000 average weekday riders. While the Joint Powers Board assumed operating responsibilities for the service in 1992, the railroad celebrated 150 years of continuous passenger service in 2014. Planning for the next 150 years of Peninsula rail service, Caltrain is on pace to electrify the system, reduce diesel emissions by 97 percent by 2040 and add more service to more stations.
