Electrification and South County Connector Service
With the launch of weekday electrified service on Monday, September 23, South Santa Clara County passengers travelling to San Francisco from Gilroy will save up to 20 minutes, and up to 11 minutes to Palo Alto.
Passengers from San Martin, Morgan Hill, Blossom Hill and Capitol stations will experience some time savings as well.
San Jose Diridon Cross-Platform Transfer
Diesel trains will continue to serve South Santa Clara County passengers with four round-trip trains between San Jose Diridon and Gilroy each weekday. A 3-minute cross-platform transfer at the San Jose Diridon Station will make it easy for passengers to transfer between the electric trains and diesel trains.
For late northbound South County Connector trains, Express trains can be held up to 2 minutes, and Limited trains up to 5 minutes, to accommodate transfers. In cases of longer delays, passengers will need to transfer to the next Local train. In the afternoon/evening southbound direction, South County Connector trains will hold when possible, with the last South County Connector train (#822) holding as late as needed to ensure all connecting passengers are accommodated.
Why no electric service to Gilroy?
The tracks south of Tamien Station belong to Union Pacific, so we cannot yet provide electrified service to Gilroy. A portion of the diesel fleet will continue to provide service from San Jose Diridon to Gilroy.
Are there plans to replace the South County diesel trains?
Caltrain is in the process of developing a prototype battery-electric train (BEMU), which would allow the trains to leave the powered section of the tracks and continue to Gilroy using a battery. Learn more about the BEMU plan.
