Four Daily Roundtrip Trains from Gilroy/Morgan Hill to San Francisco

Caltrain is proud to have added a fourth train to South County in 2023 after working with the community, advocates and city/county officials. 

Electrification and South County Service 

In September 2024 electrified service will begin between San Jose and San Francisco, diesel trains will continue to serve Gilroy passengers from San Jose Diridon. A quick, cross-platform transfer will make it easy to get from the electric trains to the diesel train. Caltrain will continue to run four, round-trip trains with Electrification service. 

Electrified service will save time from South County. 

Gilroy passengers will save 21 minutes to San Francisco and nine minutes to Palo Alto. Passengers from Morgan Hill, Blossom Hill, San Martin and Capitol stations will save time, too.  

Why no electric service to Gilroy? 

The tracks south of Tamien Station belong to Union Pacific, so we cannot yet provide electrified service to Gilroy. A portion of the diesel fleet will be kept to operate service from San Jose Diridon to Gilroy. 

Are there plans to replace the South County diesel trains? 

Yes! Caltrain is in the process of acquiring battery-electric trains (BEMUs), which would allow the trains to leave the powered section of the tracks and continue to Gilroy using a battery. Learn more about the BEMU plan.
