The time has come for the San Jose Sharks to defend their Western Conference crown, and Caltrain will once again be the fans’ choice for getting to the team’s home games at the SAP Center in San Jose. After making an unprecedented run to the Stanley Cup Finals last season, the Sharks will open up their 2016-17 regular season campaign with a home contest against the Los Angeles Kings next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Caltrain’s weekday schedule offers fans plenty of travel choices to the San Jose Diridon Station, which is just across the street from the Sharks’ home ice at the SAP Center. The last train departs San Jose Diridon station at 10:30 p.m. or 15 minutes after the game ends, but no later than 10:45 p.m. The train makes all regular local stops. Trains will stop at the Broadway and Atherton stations on weekends only. More information about Caltrain’s service for Sharks’ games is available here. Next Wednesday’s contest will be a rematch of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs, where the Sharks defeated the Kings 4-1. San Jose made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals before bowing out to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Hopes are high that this year’s squad will capture the franchise’s first Stanley Cup Championship. Caltrain is a proof-of-payment system; tickets are not sold onboard trains but can be purchased at vending machines at the stations. To save time on the return trip, fans are encouraged to buy a Day Pass. Clipper card users (cash value and 8-ride tickets) are reminded to tag on and tag off. Open alcoholic beverage containers are not allowed onboard trains starting at 9 p.m. Parking at Caltrain stations costs $5.50 for the day, and permits can be purchased at station ticket machines. Paid parking rules are enforced throughout the day. However, there are restrictions at San Jose for SAP Events. Caltrain Monthly and Daily parking permits aren't valid when the SAP Center is managing the lots. The SAP Center rates begin approximately 2 ½ hours before SAP Center events; however, the higher prices can't start before 9 a.m. on weekdays. Caltrain customers already parked before the SAP Center rates go into effect aren't impacted by the higher rate. About Caltrain: Owned and operated by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, Caltrain provides commuter rail service from San Francisco to San Jose, with limited commute service to Gilroy. Caltrain has enjoyed more than five years of consecutive monthly ridership increases, surpassing more than 60,000 average weekday riders earlier this year. While the Joint Powers Board assumed operating responsibilities for the service in 1992, the railroad celebrated 150 years of continuous passenger service in 2014. Planning for the next 150 years of Peninsula rail service, Caltrain is on pace to electrify the corridor, reduce diesel emissions by 97 percent by 2040 and add more service to more stations.
